Sydney’s outer suburbs are embracing solar energy and battery storage, while more established suburbs fall behind when it comes to making their homes energy efficient.

New data from the Clean Energy Regulator has revealed residents in Marsden Park in Sydney’s west are up to 87 percent more likely to have solar power and battery storage compared to established suburbs like Mosman in Sydney’s North shore where the take up is just 16 percent.

VoltX Energy, a leading provider of battery storage systems, says older homes are failing to take advantage of rebates to reduce their power bills.

“Demand for batteries is expected to surge as rebates become available making them more affordable than ever before,” says David Sedighi, Chief Operating Officer of VoltX Energy.

Best postcodes per region for Solar uptake across NSW

  1. 2490 – Tumbulgum, Tweed Heads 71% of dwellings
  2. 2769 – The Ponds, Sydney’s North-west 59.2% of dwellings
  3. 2265 – Cooranbong, Central Coast 52% of dwellings
  4. 2278 – Wakefield, Newcastle 51.5% of dwellings
  5. 2530 – Avondale, Wollongong 42% of dwellings

Best Sydney Suburbs for Solar take up:

  1. The Ponds – 59.2% of dwellings
  2. Glenwood, Parklea, Stanhope Gardens – 55.5% of dwellings
  3. Douglas Park – 54.6% of dwellings
  4. Box Hill, Marsden Park, Mulgrave – 51.5% of dwellings
  5. Menangle – 50.5% of dwellings

Worst Sydney Suburbs with lowest Solar take up:

  1. Elizabeth Bay, Potts Point, Rushcutters Bay, Woollomoloo – 2.9% of dwellings
  2. Ultimo – 4.8% of dwellings
  3. Darlinghurst, Surry Hills – 5.3% of dwellings
  4. Pyrmont – 5.5% of dwellings
  5. Barangaroo, Dawes Point, Haymarket, Miller’s Point, The Rocks – 5.6% of dwellings

Mr Sedighi says the rise in the solar uptake in newer suburbs could be put down to government mandates for new home construction to meet standards to achieve reductions in water and energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through BASIX.

“Energy savings aside, solar has made these new homes more energy efficient, enabling people to meet compliance for a BASIX certificate.

“We know having solar makes a new home more attractive to prospective buyers in the future too, as the cost of energy increases.

“The so-called “sun-tax” where energy providers charge customers a tariff for rooftop solar exported to its network will also drive demand for batteries,”  says Mr Sedighi.

In response to the growing need for energy savings, the NSW government will introduce a rebate starting at $1600 for battery storage systems from November 1, 2024.

“Real savings on energy costs can be made now with the release of an early rebate on household battery storage through VoltX Energy, and avoid installation delays expected in November.”

“By offering the rebate immediately, we enable customers to bypass potential backlogs and start reaping the benefits and savings right away.”

3.2 million Australian households (32 percent) have rooftop solar panels installed, 885,000 in NSW alone, with more households also now installing batteries to store the power they generate, instead of pumping back onto the grid.

The $1600 rebate will mean a VoltX Energy Battery will go from $7500 to $5900, including installation.
