Australian made energy storage solutions provider, RedEarth Energy Storage (RedEarth) announced today that it has entered into an official partnership agreement with ambibox, a leading DC electric vehicle (EV) charging company, to produce V2G bi-directional EV chargers for Australia and New Zealand customers out of RedEarth’s manufacturing facility in Darra, Queensland.
The partnership will deliver Australian made DC EV chargers to EV owners without rooftop solar or home batteries in the first half of 2025. This will allow EV owners to use V2X that includes both vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies to charge or discharge their EVs to their home or to the grid as part of RedEarth’s private power plant (PPP) ecosystem. ambibox and RedEarth’s collaboration coincides with Standards Australia’s recent announcement that V2X technology is set to be implemented in Australia from December 2024.
Charles Walker, Co-founder and CEO of RedEarth said, “RedEarth’s partnership with ambibox opens new opportunities for electric vehicle owners to use their EVs as private power plants. While rooftop solar and home battery ownership have traditionally been the drivers of the growth of distributed energy resources in Australia, the adoption of EVs has accelerated. With the introduction of V2X standards, RedEarth and ambibox will optimise the returns both for EV owners and homeowners with behind the meter assets and we’ll be well placed to serve customers as EV adoption gathers pace.
Our partnership with ambibox is a significant milestone for RedEarth on many fronts. ambibox has developed a world-class V2X EV charger that fits with RedEarth’s aspirations to lead Australia and New Zealand’s behind the meter optimisation evolution as part of the electrification mega trend. We are also delighted to be working with ambibox who have set the global standard for V2X charging.
RedEarth will be the first Australian EV charger manufacturer to be producing bi-directional chargers locally. In addition, we will pave the way for EV owners to be incentivised with additional revenue streams to power the grid and to reduce their reliance on grid electricity by using RedEarth’s private power plant ecosystem.”
Manfred Przybilla, CEO of ambibox said, “ambibox has invested heavily in developing a world-class V2X solution that is built for the future. We are delighted to be working with RedEarth to bring our EV charging solutions to Australia and New Zealand. RedEarth’s vision to deliver a private power plant ecosystem to customers truly aligns with our values and that is to enhance the returns on EVs for both auto manufacturers and their end customers.”
The manufacturing of ambibox licensed EV chargers will commence in Q2/2025 and it will be available through RedEarth’s certified authorised partner network.
The ambibox EV chargers produced by RedEarth are three phase compatible wall chargers that have been successfully tested with the vast majority of EVs available in Australia. The three phase EV charger is on track to be available in Q2/2025 with a single phase version expected to be available in Q4/2025.
According to the Electric Vehicle Council of Australia, approximately 90,000 EVs were purchased in 2023, up from 30,000 in 2022 and an increase of 300 percent year on year. It is estimated that over 100,000 new EVs will be purchased in 2024. In 2023, over eight percent of new cars purchased were EVs. With more than one charger purchase expected for each vehicle on average, this opens up a significant market for V2X EV chargers.
Founded in 2013, RedEarth is at the forefront of Australia’s energy innovation. Its residential and C&I batteries are manufactured in Brisbane, Queensland. RedEarth’s private power plant ecosystem enables customers to make, use, store and trade power in homes or businesses.
About RedEarth
Headquartered in Darra, Queensland, RedEarth has developed energy storage systems and an energy management platform for both on and off-grid customers in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. We are dedicated to producing high-quality solutions that are versatile, scalable and built to customers’ specifications and expandable to suit their needs for more electricity over time.
Over 10,000 RedEarth systems and batteries have been deployed since the company was founded in 2013. Our vision is for businesses and households to sustainably generate more clean energy than they can consume, enabling them to sell their excess electricity to the grid or for it to be traded between individuals at prices commensurate for contributing to Australia’s growing electricity needs.
We’re creating a positive impact by expanding the growth of renewable energy to decarbonise the grid. Through distributed storage, RedEarth expands the capacity for renewable energy generated to be seamlessly added to the grid to deliver greater value to our customers, to help the grid, to benefit the environment and to contribute to the greater good of Australia.
