BREAD
The most common food waste victim is bread.
We love our sandwiches, toast and rolls – we simply love bread. That’s why we buy so much of it.
Unfortunately, we also waste a lot of it. For every loaf baked, half a loaf is thrown away. That’s one reason why bread is one of our most wasted food items at home.
The thing is, we do not need to throw away any of it. There are many great ways to use up stale bread and avoid leftovers. Remember these three tips: freeze it, use it or transform it.
Tips on using frozen bread safely
- To defrost your bread loaf put it in the refrigerator. Do not leave it to defrost anywhere else such as on the kitchen counter or in the sink.
- If your loaf has been sliced, take a slice as needed. You can pop it straight into the toaster and have a sandwich ready in minutes.
- Check for mould. Mould is toxic and can make you very sick. If the bread had harmful bacteria or other organisms before it was frozen, the freezing process would not kill them.
- Once the bread has been thawed, it’s best not to refreeze it.
