Celebrate Positive Ageing Month this October

From a nature walk and come-and-try lawn bowls, to movie screenings, morning teas and multi-generational play time with kindergarteners — Positive Ageing Month promises a diverse range of activities this October.

The Surf Coast Shire Council will mark Positive Ageing Month with events spread across the coast and hinterland to celebrate people aged 55 and over.

Councillor Gary Allen encouraged interested people to view the calendar of events, which includes:

  • Seniors Community Luncheon at Anglesea Bowls Club (5 October)
  • Wiser Walker, Wiser Traveller course at Council office, Torquay (6, 20 and 27 October)
  • A short Surf Coast Walk in Jan Juc, guided by Angair (9 October)
  • Torquay Community Luncheon at Torquay Seniors Citizens Centre (10 October)
  • Have a go at bowls at Lorne Bowls Club (11 October)
  • Movie, music and afternoon tea at Deans Marsh Cottage (12 October)
  • Lorne village kinder play time at St Cuthbert’s Hall (13 October)
  • Various women’s sharing shed and men’s shed open days (17 to 19 October)
  • Hinterland Movie Club event at Winchelsea Shire Hall (23 October)
  • View events and book

“There is a wonderful selection of events, with majority organised by community groups and organisations to link in with this year’s Victoria Seniors Festival theme to ‘Learn, Love, Live’ your best life,” Cr Allen said.

“I attended numerous events last year, and was delighted to see the social connections made and the knowledge shared. I’m sure that the 2023 celebrations will be just as special, bringing together the community for plenty of fun.

“Positive Ageing Month aligns with the Council’s work towards an age-friendly community, where ageing people are valued, respected and actively supported to participate in their community.”

Positive Ageing Month is part of the Victorian Seniors Festival — a Victorian Government initiative. Victorian Seniors Card holders can enjoy eight days of free public transport throughout Victoria from 1 to 8 October 2023. Free travel will be available across all metropolitan services, V/Line train and coach services, and selected regional bus services outside of the myki-enabled area.
