Clifton Springs has a relatively shallow harbour, located in an area of natural sand and seagrass deposition, particularly after winter / spring storms.
This year, more sand and seagrass than normal has washed in to the harbour, which has seen us recently complete one of our largest ever dredging operations in the area.
However, a large amount of seagrass debris and associated sediments is already refilling the dredged channels, making it difficult for vessels to access or leave the harbour at lower tide levels.
Vessel operators have been notified of the conditions via Maritime Safety and Boating Vic, as well as signs placed at the harbour.
We are seeking approval to undertake further maintenance dredging as soon as possible.
In the meantime, vessel users are asked to take extra care at the entrance.
SEAGRASS WRACK
The prolific growth of seagrass beds on the Bellarine banks in recent years has resulted in a vast quantity of ‘wrack’ on parts of the coast.
The City will clear excess wrack prior to the Christmas holiday period at beaches at the Dell, Curlewis, Hervey Park and Edgewater Drive.
