Local input has laid the foundations for the Draft Moriac Structure Plan, which invites more community feedback after being endorsed by Surf Coast Shire Council for public comment.
The plan will guide land use and development decisions for Moriac for the next 10 years and will ensure that future incremental growth is responsive to the constraints of the landscape and respectful of the rural character of the town.
Council adopted the draft plan at its May Council meeting, with Councillor Adrian Schonfelder thanking community members who helped shape the plan’s vision: Moriac will continue to thrive as a compact rural town, surrounded by protected farmland and healthy waterways. The character of the town will be defined by residential streetscapes, green open spaces, and a network of paths and trails. Infrastructure investment will support planned growth and allow Moriac residents to work effectively from home.
“It’s fantastic to see current community views and aspirations reflected in this document, including addressing future growth,” Cr Schonfelder said. “Moriac is a hinterland gem, and the community has told us that they want to retain its small-town character. It’s a common theme across the six guiding principles: environment and culture, housing, open space, movement, infrastructure and local economy. I am looking forward to future conversations about this plan.”
The plan highlights there is a majority view that Moriac should be protected as a place with limited rural residential development.
“Initial community engagement also told us that locals would like more footpath and trail connections throughout the town, which will encourage transport by foot and bike and improve safety,” Cr Schonfelder said. “Increased public transport is another priority, to help people get to and from Moriac and surrounding areas.”
The plan acknowledges the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners as the first custodians of Moriac, and encourages the consideration of Traditional Owner knowledge and culture in future decision-making.
“As a sixth-generation resident of the area, I pay my respects to First Nations people of the area,” Cr Schonfelder said.
Community information sessions will be held for people to learn more about the Draft Moriac Structure Plan. Community members are invited to attend Newling Reserve Community Centre on Wednesday 28 June between 2 pm and 4 pm, or between 6 pm and 8 pm.
