FREE PARKING IN GEELONG’S CBD

The City of Greater Geelong is offering a free on-street parking in two-hour metered zones this December to encourage people to enjoy shopping and dining in Geelong’s CBD.

The free parking is part of a new $2.04 million suite of initiatives to support the ongoing recovery of our region’s community, business, arts, culture and tourism sectors.

Shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of the free CBD parking initiative.

Drivers will still need to obey the time limit on the signs but will not have to pay.  The City will forgo $190,000 in revenue on the parking initiative, which runs for the month of December 2021.

The City implemented subsidised parking in July 2021 to support city businesses recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Motorists normally pay for one hour of parking and get the second hour free in all 2P parking zones in central Geelong. On-street parking in Geelong is also free on weekends.

The new package takes the overall value of COVID-19 support measures delivered by the Council to the Greater Geelong community since March 2020, to almost $19 million.

Mayor Stephanie Asher

With two-hour parking free in Central Geelong throughout December, it is now easier to enjoy the fun of Victoria’s Christmas capital.

We’re encouraging our community and visitors to support local business by experiencing the fantastic shopping, dining and entertainment on offer in our CBD this holiday season

Councillor Eddy Kontelj

The business community has encouraged us to look at free parking as a way of accelerating the revival of Central Geelong.

We know free parking can help generate visitation to shopping precincts, and it’s important we do what we can to encourage activity in Central Geelong in the lead-up to Christmas.

Free 2P parking will also make things that little bit easier for the community and reduce the financial burden and stress that is synonymous with this time of year. We really want the community to relax and enjoy all that the CBD has to offer, including live entertainment during this festive season.
