Join the Walk Against Family Violence

Torquay Community House is inviting Surf Coast community members to help illuminate a national crisis by joining a Walk Against Family Violence.

The 25 November event will aim to demonstrate support for victim-survivors and send a message to the wider community that family and gender-based violence is never OK.

The walk will mark the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the annual international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.

Surf Coast Shire Council is supporting the walk as part of its participation in the 16 Days of Activism.

The inclusive and accessible walk will leave Torquay Community House, 14 Price Street, at 11.30 am and return about 12.30 pm. Participants are being encouraged to wear the day’s signature colour orange.

“The aim of the walk is to unite with thousands of other people walking in Victoria to show our support for victim-survivors and send a message that there is never an excuse for family violence and violence against women,” Torquay Community House Co-ordinator Prue Challis said.

“We need to remember that on average one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner. Domestic violence is the largest driver of homelessness for women, and intimate partner violence is the greatest health risk factor for women aged 25 to 44.

“These are shocking statistics, and this is absolutely a national crisis.

“That is why we are calling on a range of community members – not just women – to join us on the walk. Show up, let the community know you care.”

Surf Coast Shire Councillor Rose Hodge encouraged people to help stand up to family and gender-based violence.

“Shining a light on the issue is an important step and coming together in this way can help do that,” Cr Hodge said.

“We need to create conversations and deepen community understanding of the factors which contribute to family and gender-based violence and help promote gender equity as a key factor in prevention.”

Council is supporting the event and providing funding that will help Torquay Community House establish a library of books and information promoting gender equity, inclusion and respectful relationships.

Refreshments will be provided at the Community House following the walk. People can find more information about the Walk Against Family Violence via walk.safesteps.org.au
