SHARE YOUR VIEWS ON LOW COST CAMPING

The City of Greater Geelong is seeking public feedback as part of a review to establish a low-cost camping site and Recreational Vehicle (RV) amenities in North Geelong.

The northern suburbs have been selected as the potential location for low-cost camping due to the proximity to the Spirit of Tasmania’s new terminal and to cater to visitors at nearby major events including the Australian International Airshow and Lara Food and Wine Festival.

Geelong’s north also has an array of nature-based tourism experiences for visitors to enjoy.
From spring 2022, North Geelong will become an entry point for thousands of travellers annually, including those with RVs, as the new home for the Spirit of Tasmania.

The relocation of the Spirit of Tasmania to Corio Quay is expected to provide a significant boost to the economy, increasing tourism expenditure by $57.3 million in Geelong by 2029-30.

An independent consultation will consider the public feedback and provide a recommendation to Council on:

The viability of establishing a low-cost camping site and RV amenities in Geelong;
Preferred site locations;
Economic impacts of a low-cost camping site and RV amenities; and
Community and environmental impacts of a low-cost camping site and RV amenities.

In November 2013, an initial assessment of potential and existing RV amenities and an RV Friendly Town Review was presented to Council.  A Notice of Motion in July 2021 highlighted the need to review the initial assessment into RV amenities along with low-cost camping in the northern areas of Geelong.

Community members are invited to take part in an online survey from Wednesday 9 March to Wednesday 30 March 2022 at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au

Councillors will review the recommendations when they are presented to Council in the coming months.

Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan

The Spirit of Tasmania’s move to North Geelong is an exciting time for our region and serves as a perfect time to review the viability of establishing low-camping options and RV amenities in the north. We encourage you to share your feedback via the online survey so we can capture the community’s thoughts on establishing these facilities in the north of Geelong.

Windermere Ward Councillor Kylie Grzybek

This review will look into the viability of a low-cost camping site and RV amenities in the north of Geelong. Along with catering to travellers using the Spirit of Tasmania, these facilities could help strengthen connections to our unique nature-based tourism experiences on offer and major events like the Australian International Airshow and Lara Food and Wine Festival.  This could also see a boost to the local economy from RV/Caravan travellers who haven’t stopped in the north of Geelong before.
